Since 1946 the USA and indeed most of the free society has been living in the era of baby boomers. With the peace and prosperity that followed the end of World War II, many people felt comfortable with beginning or increasing families. Satellites were placed into orbit and became important to everyday communications. Manned space journey became possible and human beings walked on the surface of the moon. TV rather than radio became the main means of both amusement and news dissemination and this impacted politics and leisure entertainment.
Medical breakthroughs involved the extensive use of vaccines that ended the scourge of smallpox all over the world and polio was largely put under control too. Most of what had been called the typical childhood diseases have become anything but prevalent in the age of baby boomers. Organ transplants are no longer rare, blocked blood vessels in the heart can be repaired or bypassed, several cancers are curable, and surgeries once considered impossible are now routine. Even test tube babies became possible with the birth of in vitro fertilization.
