Know More About Earl Grey (Earl Gray) Tea
Like any ageless classic, the sources of Earl Grey tea (at times incorrectly spelled as Earl Gray tea) are surrounded in mystery. The blend was termed for the Second Earl Grey, who was a British Prime Minister in the year 1830's.
According to several stories, the combination was given to him by a Chinese Mandarin whose son was rescued from drowning by one of Lord Grey's men. Other accounts hold the tea coming as a present given to one of Lord Grey's envoys, when he was traveling in China, with orders to deliver it to his Lord on his return to England.
Yet another account supports that the initial recipe was offered to George Charlton by Earl Grey himself. Mr. Charlton was a partner in Jackson & Co., and Jackson of Piccadilly states that the recipe has been in continuous production ever since, and it has never left their hands.
To add yet another twist to the myth of the way the tea came to be, the Grey family themselves reports that the combination was created by a Chinese Mandarin for them, especially to suit the water at Howick Hall in Northumberland (the Grey Family Seat). Bergamot was chosen specifically to help counterbalance the high lime content in the local water supply in that area, and the combination first gained popularity since Lady Grey used it for entertaining in London, and was finally asked if it could be marketed to a larger market.
In order to support this, a company known as Twinings was provided the recipe, and promoted it from that point on as 'Earl Grey tea.' (remember that although many websites, and also a fair number of printed materials list it as 'Earl Gray Tea' there isn't any brand name bearing that specific spelling. This is mostly a function of minor differences between the Queen's English and American English).
No matter which of these stories is eventually right (and it is quite possible that all of them consist of certain essential facts), one thing that may be fairly stated is that Earl Grey tea, by whatever spelling, is possibly the best known of the English teas, at least on the global stage. There have been numerous references to it in books, films, and TV series through the years, and its exclusive flavor makes it tough to forget!
